Brief History

The silver half dollar coins came about a month after the former United States President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1964 in Dallas, Texas. The motion to eliminate the Franklin half dollar design and create a coin that would commemorate the former president was immediately passed by Congress, known as Public Law 88-256. The famous sculptors of these coins were Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro. 

The Kennedy half dollars vary in silver content from 1964 to 1970. They were primarily melted for the amount of silver in them. In 1964, the half dollars were made from 90% silver and 10% copper during its first production phase. From 1965 to 1970, the percentage of fine silver contained in a half dollar coin was reduced from 90% to 40%. Specifically, coins were made from 40% silver and 60% copper. Then, in 1971, silver was eliminated entirely from the coins. Instead of fine silver, coins minted by that time were made from 75% copper and 25% nickel. 

Consequently, this paved the way for the increased production of half-dollar coins. However, it resulted only in a minor increase in usage. In 1975 and 1976, a reverse of the half dollar with a special design was issued for the United States Bicentennial. This was followed by collector coins in which the half dollars were minted with 90% fine silver content in 1992. This continues to satisfy the increasing demand for silver half-dollar coins from many collectors. But its availability from most banks also renders its circulation to be limited until today. 

 

Value of Silver Half Dollar

The value of half dollars is different based on several factors. Although varieties of these coins appear unique in design and structure, billions of these were minted and carry no premium value. As a collector, if your half-dollar coin is worn in terms of condition or grade, it would most likely belong to a circulated coin. But if your coin shows no evidence of wear due to being in circulation, it is definitely considered an uncirculated coin. With this, the value of the coin highly depends on whether it’s circulated or uncirculated. Ultimately, its price will vary depending on the actual grade of the coin.

Compared to the circulated half dollar coins, the uncirculated ones are valued at a higher price, considering their grade, quality, rarity, and condition.
